Are you a creative who wants to learn how to showcase your work in a professional way?

Do you want to gain practical skills and insights from experts in the art industry?

If so, you don’t want to miss these three workshops! 

You will learn how to:

  • Manage and operate an art gallery, from planning to budgeting to staffing.

  • Curate and exhibit your own art, from selecting artworks to designing layouts to installing displays.

  • Market and promote your art, from creating a portfolio to reaching your audience to selling your work.

You will also have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop where you can ask questions and get feedback on your specific art topics or installation needs.

FRACC and Business Partnerships and Solutions at Bristol Community College designed four with regional creative entrepreneurs in mind to support individual to elevate their small business practices. The workshops were presented by Bristol facilitators.

Business Planning for Creative Entrepreneurs with Mary Ellen Defrias

Turn your vision into a reality by transferring ideas into a business plan on paper. Business plans are the foundation of a sustainable business. A solid business plan will help guide your actions as a business owner and provide the framework needed to capture the eyes of investors. 

Throughout the 2-hour workshop, business owners will understand business plan development at a high level:

  • Construct the elements of a business plan

  • Design and develop a plan that will enable the business to reach its goals      

  • Create the roles and responsibilities of the operations and management teams 

  • Understand market strategies and competitive analysis

 

Project Management for Creative Entrepreneurs with Mary Ellen Defrias

This 2-hour workshop provides creative entrepreneurs with the basics of project management, including the theory and core methodology needed to manage projects individually or participate on collaborative projects. After taking this course, participants will have a solid foundation of the basic principles of project management, including time management, setting priority levels, and managing change and stakeholders as well as apply project management concepts in their small business practices.

 

Marketing 101 for Creative Entrepreneurs with Bill Barry

What's your overall plan? Have you established a written road map for effectively marketing your business?

This 2-hour workshop will help creative entrepreneurs:

  • Identify how to create a needed/desired product or service.  

  • Recognize their product’s target market and classify who the ideal customer is for their product.      

  • Compare the connection between product offering and sale.      

  • Identify the competitive landscape: Who is your competition, and how do you differentiate yourself? 

  • Recognize pricing to market levels: Establishing effective price points for each offering.      

  • Create market awareness for their product or service: What marketing tools best fit your business?

 

Project Budget Development for Creative Entrepreneurs with Mary Ellen Defrias

Do you have a strong financial understanding of your small business’ revenue and expenses? Financial management is important for a sustainable operation. This project budget development workshop will help you and your small business learn information, strategies and techniques to make strong financial decisions. 

This 2-hour workshop will help creative entrepreneurs:

  • Create an action plan for your small business to achieve goals through determining how revenue and expenses are used.

  • Understand the different types of business budgets and the reasons behind each type of budget to inform decisions.

  • How to plan and develop budgets unique to your small business.

  • Understand methods to monitor your budget and adjust when necessary.

  • Identify five common mistakes in managing budget

Tax Planning And Schedule C For Creatives: Filing As A Business Since You Are One

When you receive a grant for a project that is paid to you as an individual your first reaction is to rejoice: you got funding! Your next should be how am I going to track the income and expenses so I don’t pay too much of the money as taxes. This workshop will provide info to help you understand planning for taxes, organizing record keeping and what you can write off against your 1099 (grant and other) income. We will focus on how to manage tracking what should be declared on your Schedule C or other tax records filed under your own tax ID.

Essential Marketing for Creatives

Even the most interesting work you can do can languish if no one is aware of it. Learn why you need marketing through social media and how to promote yourself (and get results) through that and effective email blasts. Learn how to manage your marketing and your public identity. Find out the basics of how often to put things out and what are the basics of good posts in social media and good content in email blasts. Learn some basics of the tools available for social media management and email marketing creation. This is a basic-level workshop and no previous experience is necessary.

Writing Placemaking Grants

Publicly accessible art and community participation are at the heart of many arts and culture grants, known as place-based grants. This workshop will cover the basic building blocks that make up a proposal, including the review process and how to persevere through rejection. Led by reviewers and successful grant writers with place-based grant experience, they will discuss what makes a good proposal and what makes a good placemaking project. Participants will leave empowered and prepared to write a grant proposal.

Many of the things creatives do require a complex set of plans. Deciding the type of project, its goals, the scope, the timeline, the materials, the team (if any), the budget, finding funding, or producing a project proposal on guesswork and marketing… can feel daunting without a plan. This workshop will break that down into more straightforward ways of planning and developing a project for any creative person. A plan you can execute is more likely to lead to success than flying by the seat of your pants. Participants will learn how to plan an appropriate project for the appropriate opportunity. This is an introductory-level workshop.

The Ignition Space is a white-box space located at 341 South Main Street. Open Thurs 11-6, Fri 11-8, S+S 11-3.

This space, provided by FRACC, offers a safe environment for exhibitions, learning, and creative arts programming. 

 

Our approximately 700 sq ft of space eliminates these barriers by providing a secure environment for practice, learning, and on-site support as you carry out your proposed event or project. Creative individuals, small organizations, and community groups are invited to submit proposals through a community request process.

Applications are closed for this round of grants.

The Ignition Fund will uplift six creatives with awards up to $2,000 to bring their proposed project to reality within The Ignition Space. 


With the award funds, creatives will have access to The Ignition Space for 1-month to implement, market, and host a public event - which could be a reception or engagement-based program. In addition to the cash award, the selected participants must attend all Ignition Space engagement-based and best practices workshops and be present at least two fellow cohort members’ receptions.


The deadline to complete the Phase 1: Grant Eligibility is 11:59 pm EST on Friday, December 15, 2023. 

The deadline to complete Phase 2: Proposed Project is 11:59 pm EST on Friday, December 22, 2023.

In 2022 FRACC introduced this new grant program to support and fund Fall River’s artists. The pilot grant program brought a multifaceted approach to advancing the City of Fall River’s creative economic recovery and accelerated growth from the pandemic to “build back better”.

A total of $25,000 in mini-grants was awarded to ten individual creatives. Congratulations to the grant recipients! Funds were used to sustain their livelihood and implement a public-facing placemaking project. Visit our blog to learn more
