Ruth Douzinas, one of the exhibitors of the 2024 UMass Dartmouth MFA Student Thesis Exhibition, and Dishant Patel, Manager of Design Research & Technologies at New Bedford Research and Robotics (NBRR) collaborated for a live drawing session and artist talk at The Fall River Arts & Culture Coalition’s Ignition Space in Fall River, MA on April 28, 2024.
The robot used in the drawing session is classified as an ABB robot, with a handheld screen called a Touch Pendant that acts as the controller. With ease, Patel demonstrated the precision of the ABB by holding various objects such as pencils and a fishing net. In her talk, Douzinas describes her Greek heritage and the desire to highlight objects that are commonplace and often discarded as inspiration for her thesis. NBRR assisted with creating one of Douzinas’ pieces, using a large robot armed with a clay extruder to 3D print ionic column pieces.
